Specs from the PolyJohn Comfort XL product listing, which describes the unit as wheelchair accessible. We do not call any single unit “ADA-compliant”; compliance depends on the whole site, including the path to the unit.

How much space does an accessible unit need?

An accessible unit needs a firm, level pad about 6 by 6 feet, plus a clear approach in front of the door. The 2010 ADA Standards describe a 60-inch diameter turning circle or a T-shaped space for wheelchair turning. The path to the unit should be firm, with no steps or soft grass.

Set accessible units on pavement, compacted gravel or a plywood path. A wheelchair cannot cross soft winter lawn. Place the unit at the end of a cluster so the door swings toward the open path.

How many accessible units does an event need?

An event needs at least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster to be accessible, and never fewer than one, under section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards. A cluster of 10 units needs 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 21 units needs 2 accessible units. Confirm local rules with your venue or permit office.

Units in the clusterAccessible units requiredWorked example
1–2016 units for a 300-guest party → 1 accessible + 5 standard
21–40224 units at a festival gate → 2 accessible
41–60345 units → 3 accessible

Source: 2010 ADA Standards §213.2 (5% of each cluster, rounded up, minimum one). This is the legal minimum; we suggest one more when many older guests attend. This is not legal advice.

How is an accessible unit serviced?

An accessible unit is pumped, deodorized, scrubbed and restocked on the same weekly schedule as a standard unit. The technician also checks that the door closer, handrails and floor are clean and dry, because a slick floor matters more for wheelchair users.

FAQ

Accessible porta potty questions

Call now (707) 781-5587

Is your accessible unit ADA-compliant?

We describe it as wheelchair accessible, as PolyJohn does. ADA compliance depends on the whole setup: the unit, a firm path, the turning space and the count of accessible units. We help you plan all of those.

How much does a wheelchair-accessible porta potty cost?

An accessible unit typically runs $250–$375 for a weekend event with delivery and pickup. Monthly accessible units are quoted per 28-day cycle with weekly service.

Do construction sites need an accessible unit?

Cal/OSHA does not set an accessible-unit count for crews. If a worker uses a wheelchair or a site is open to the public, add one.

Can an accessible unit go on grass?

Only on firm, dry grass. For wet lawns, we set it on a plywood or gravel pad so a wheelchair can roll to the door.

Does it have a sink?

The Comfort XL has a hand sanitizer dispenser. Pair it with a handwashing station set at a reachable height.
