What does Cal/OSHA require for field sanitation?
Cal/OSHA 8 CCR 3457 requires one toilet and one handwashing facility for every 20 agricultural workers or fraction of 20, with separate toilets for each sex. The facilities must be within a quarter-mile walk or within 5 minutes, whichever is shorter. Employers with fewer than 5 workers may use one single-user toilet.
Read the regulation: Cal/OSHA 8 CCR 3457.
What must the handwashing facility have?
Each handwashing facility needs a steady supply of potable water, soap and single-use towels, plus a sign stating the water is for handwashing only. A two-sink station with 22 gallons covers about 350 washes per fill, which is several days for a crew of 20.
How are service records kept?
Toilets must be kept clean and working at all times, and the service and maintenance records must be kept for 2 years. We leave a dated service record at each visit and can email a monthly log for your files.
How do you meet the quarter-mile rule on large blocks?
On large vineyard blocks, towable units on a small trailer move with the crew, so the toilets stay within a quarter-mile walk as picking moves. If terrain blocks access, the rule allows placing facilities at the nearest point of vehicle access.
Book units: farm and industrial rentals, handwashing stations.
